48 Hours in Hobart (No Car Needed!)

Hobart is one of Australia’s most family-friendly destinations, offering a mix of history, nature, wildlife, and fun activities for both little kids and big kids. Whether you’re travelling with toddlers, tweens, or teens, you can enjoy two days of adventure - all within easy reach of The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel.

Day 1

City Adventures & Waterfront Fun

Family Breakfast

Start the day with breakfast in your apartment or enjoy a hearty breakfast in our onsite Stockmans Restaurant. Parents can enjoy a quality coffee while the kids fuel up for the day ahead.

Salamanca Market (Saturday Mornings)

If you’re here on a Saturday, Salamanca Market is a must. Full of colour, food stalls, and buskers, it’s just a 10-minute walk from The Old Woolstore. Kids will love the lively performers, food and gifts, while parents can browse local crafts and produce.

Red Decker Hop-On Hop-Off Bus

Climb aboard the iconic open-top Red Decker bus for a fun family tour with hop on and hop off stops around the city. Kids love the novelty of sitting upstairs, while parents can relax and see the city highlights without navigating traffic.

Battery Point & Princes Park

Hop off the Red Decker Bus at Battery Point, one of Hobart’s most historic neighbourhoods. Parents can relax with a coffee and pastry at Jackman & McRoss - a beloved fixture of Hobart’s local food scene. The kids enjoy fresh air in Princes Park nearby with wide lawns and playgrounds -perfect for a picnic or letting the kids run off some energy.

Horse & Carriage Ride

Add some novelty to the day with a horse-drawn carriage ride around Salamanca and Battery Point. It’s a unique way to see Hobart’s waterfront and an experience kids won’t forget.

Pennicott Wilderness Journeys

For a dash of adventure, board a Pennicott Wilderness Cruise right from the Hobart wharf and just a short walk from our Hobart hotel. These family-friendly cruises give kids a chance to spot wildlife and see Hobart from the water.

A Historical Afternoon

Trail of Terrific Tales

Head to Hadley’s Orient Hotel and follow the Trail of Terrific Tales. This self-guided storytelling walk reveals fascinating snippets of Hobart’s past - perfect for curious minds and families who love a good story.

TMAG (Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery)

Wander through TMAG on the walk back from Hadley’s to The Old Woolstore. TMAG is free and designed with families in mind. With discovery zones, hands-on science exhibits, and natural history displays, it’s perfect for children of all ages.

Evening Wind-Down

Head back to your apartment, make an easy family dinner in the fully equipped kitchen, and enjoy a relaxing evening together. Or, if cooking isn’t your fancy tonight, our onsite restaurant and room service menu offer family-friendly options made with fresh, local ingredients. Grab a book from our free family library in Reception and finish off a busy day with a story and a cosy pillow from our pillow menu.

Day 2

A Wild Morning

Breakfast at The Old Woolstore

Fuel up with breakfast in your room or our onsite Stockmans Restaurant before grabbing your car from the on-site car park and heading out of town.

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary

Just 30 minutes’ drive from our Hobart Hotel, Bonorong is a highlight for families. Meet wombats, hand-feed kangaroos, and learn about Tasmanian devils in this hands-on sanctuary.

Richmond Village & The Famous Lolly Shop

On the way back, stop in Richmond, home to Australia’s oldest bridge and a charming village atmosphere. There is plenty of history and a walk around the village reveals quaint cottages, shops and galleries. Don’t miss the Richmond lolly shop - a treat for kids and “big kids” alike, filled with traditional sweets, ice cream and Tasmanian-made goodies.

Classic Winter Adventure

Mount Wellington (Kunanyi)

If the kids still have energy, drive up to the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington for sweeping views. With this stunning backdrop, teens will love the selfie opportunities, while little ones can enjoy exploring the alpine setting. In winter, rug up and enjoy a snowball fight!

When the day is done, head back to The Old Woolstore and relax in the bathtub, order room service and settle in for a family movie night - you’ve earned it!
